--High-Purity Nickel Tubes for Severe Chemical Environments
Discover the differences between seamless and welded pure nickel tubes (CAS 7440-02-0). Learn how to select the right tubing for harsh chemical applications.
CAS 7440-02-0, Nickel 200, 201 Nickel Alloy Tubes
Pure nickel tubes are often used in environments where ordinary stainless steel cannot withstand prolonged use. The nickel referred to here corresponds to CAS 7440-02-0, and common engineering grades include Nickel 200 and low-carbon Nickel 201. They are relatively stable in reducing media, especially resistant to high concentrations of caustic alkalis, while maintaining good processing properties, strength, and ductility. For chlor-alkali production, chemical processing, and the transportation of high-purity media, these characteristics are often more important than simply pursuing higher strength. If the working conditions contain strong oxidizing media, corrosion data must be checked separately; alkali resistance performance cannot be directly applied to all environments.
Even among pure nickel tubes, seamless and welded tubing have different manufacturing processes. Seamless tubing are typically manufactured through extrusion, piercing, and cold working. They lack longitudinal welds and are suitable for equipment and pipelines operating under high pressure, significant temperature variations, or where strict continuity is required. However, the absence of welds does not preclude inspection. Dimensions, surface finish, mechanical properties, and pressure resistance still need to be verified individually.
Welded tubing are formed from nickel plates or strips and then welded together. Mature welding, heat treatment, and non-destructive testing processes ensure stable performance of the weld and base material. Welded tubing offer advantages in wall thickness uniformity, large-diameter supply, and material utilization. Costs are also easier to control when projects require large quantities. Actual selection should not solely focus on the presence or absence of welds; design pressure, temperature, media corrosiveness, tube diameter, quantity, and inspection level must be considered together.
In chlor-alkali plants, pure nickel tubes are commonly used in evaporators, heat exchangers, and caustic alkali delivery systems. These types of tubes are also used in food processing, synthetic fiber manufacturing, and some electronics manufacturing processes to maintain media cleanliness and reduce contamination risks.
When purchasing, the grade is only the starting point. Chemical composition, manufacturing method, heat treatment condition, dimensional tolerances, and inspection records should all conform to ASTM or ASME requirements. Only by verifying these items can you determine whether a batch of Nickel Tubes is truly suitable for long-term operation.
