--A Cost-Effective Solution for Low-Pressure Industrial Piping

Discover ASTM A778 304L welded pipe for low-pressure systems. Learn material properties and manufacturing processes for cost-effective industrial piping.

ASTM A778 304L welded pipe

Stainless steel 304L A778 welded pipe is commonly used in conveying systems under low pressure, normal temperature, or moderately corrosive environments. Understanding the positioning of the ASTM A778 standard and the properties of 304L material helps in achieving a better balance between cost and performance.

The ASTM A778 specification applies to untreated austenitic stainless steel welded pipe, primarily for structural applications, low-pressure conveying, decorative, or general industrial uses. Compared to ASTM A312, A778 has relatively different requirements for non-destructive testing and pressure testing, and is generally not the first choice for high-pressure pressure-bearing pipelines.

304L Material Properties

304L (UNS S30403) is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel with a carbon content ≤0.03%, offering stronger resistance to intergranular corrosion and good forming and welding properties.

Typical Composition (%): Cr: 18–20, Ni: 8–12, C: ≤0.03

Manufacturing Characteristics of A778 304L Welded Pipe

Common manufacturing processes: Roll Forming, Automatic Welding (TIG/Laser), Weld Grinding or Internal Leveling, Dimensioning and Surface Finishing

Key Control Points: Weld penetration, surface quality, ovality, and wall thickness uniformity

A778 welded pipe is typically suitable for non-high-pressure environments, such as: building water supply and drainage, low-pressure process pipelines, and food processing auxiliary systems.
