--Quality Control and Selection Guide for EFW Duplex Stainless Steel Piping

Explore ASTM A928M guidelines for EFW duplex pipes. MTSCO ensures weld integrity and corrosion resistance with 100% NDT and strict quality control.

ASTM A928M-08a is one of the key acceptance criteria commonly used for duplex stainless steel welded pipes. Understanding its scope and inspection points helps engineering and procurement teams select materials, control quality, and reduce risks more reliably in corrosion-resistant and pressure-bearing applications.

Quality Control

ASTM A928M-08a is for welded pipes made of ferritic/austenitic (duplex) stainless steel, typically including UNS S31803 (2205), S32205, and S32750 (2507).

Weld Consistency with Base Metal: Duplex steels are sensitive to heat input; improper welding and subsequent heat treatment can lead to phase imbalance, affecting corrosion resistance and toughness.

Heat Treatment Requirements: The A928M system typically specifies requirements for solution treatment/heat treatment conditions to restore microstructure and corrosion resistance.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) coverage: For welded pipes, it is recommended to clearly define UT/RT/ET methods and proportions to ensure controllable weld defects.

Corrosion resistance index guidance: For seawater, chlorine-containing media, and H₂S-containing environments, PREN (pitting equivalent) or necessary corrosion testing strategies (determined by project/owner specifications) should be added to the project specifications to avoid ordering solely based on grade.

Selection and application recommendations

2507 is preferred for high-chlorine/seawater/wet chlorine environments; 2205 offers better cost-effectiveness for general chlorine-containing conditions.

Prioritize mature automated welding/stable heat input processes, and match them with appropriate welding consumables and process qualification (PQR/WPS).

Upon arrival, perform PMI material identification, dimensional/ovalness, and appearance re-inspection; for critical projects, randomly check weld NDT reports and heat treatment records to reduce on-site rework.

MTSCO can supply duplex stainless steel pipes and fittings according to standards such as ASTM/EN/GOST. Upon receipt, a second PMI is performed. The production process is tracked by on-site QC and traceable records are kept. Before leaving the factory, UT/ET/RT tests are organized according to project requirements, and third-party verification by SGS/TUV is supported to help customers control the weld seam and corrosion risk of duplex welded pipes before delivery.
